Montenegro and Northern Cyprus are countries that regain peace after decades of war. Their unique backgrounds arouse interests and turn them into alternative new spots for tourists. Although the two countries are small, their rich cultural and historical values, unique natural landscape and beautiful ports offer travelers peaceful and harmonious enjoyment.
Historical Cities
Officially declared its independence in 2006, Montenegro is located in the southwestern part of the Balkan Peninsula. Kotor, a UNESCO World Heritage site in the country, was constructed during Age of Romans in 168 BC. Ruled by the Venetians from the 15th to the 16th centuries, the old city retains its original medieval villages, especially the solid and complete 600-year-old ancient city wall. You can climb the stone steps of the ancient wall to enjoy the magnificent and postcard-like scenery of the blue bay and the continuous red tile buildings from the top.
The Lovćen National Park is home to the mausoleum of Petar II Petrović-Njegoš, the Monetenegrin poet and a national hero. The observation deck outside the mausoleum with a 360-degree panoramic view showcases the breathtaking view of endless mountains and seas. Moreover, you should not miss the Durmitor National Park where you can enjoy some relaxing moments at the hill-surrounded crystal-clear lake or take a small wooden boat to experience the comfortable scenery around.
Northern Cyprus
Northern Cyprus has undergone many years of civil war and was officially split from Cyprus in 1983. Until now, only Turkey has recognized its national identity. As an Islamic country, after the founding of Northern Cyprus, the government transformed the original Christian churches into mosques, mixing the two religions and architectural styles together. The many bullet marks left on the exterior walls of the buildings add a splash of pass sorrow. Being the only divided capital city in the world, it is not difficult to encounter in Nicosia the green line separating north and south.
Other major attractions include Kyrenia which is noted for its beautiful harbour, Rizokarpaso and the “ghost town” Famagusta. As the main tourist area in the Northern Cyprus, the most notable and worth-visiting monument in Kyrenia is the St. Hilarion Castle. Built along the hill in the 16th century, the castle is said to be the inspiration of Walt Disney’s great work “Snow White”. Following the instructions, you can see living spaces such as the kitchen, church and rooms, etc. You can overlook the panoramic views of Kyrenia through the small Gothic window at the highest point of the western castle wall, it is also dubbed the renowned “Queen’s Window” which was only accessible to nobles at the time.

Montenegro cultivates a natural and pollution-free environment and becomes a holiday paradise. For instance, the famous football-pitch-size Sveti Stefan is considered as the fancy “Princess Island” for its shape of a leaf floating on the water. In the Middle Ages, the island was just a fishing village and later became the summer residence of the Queen. Now it belongs to a luxury hotel group and only opens for resort guests.
Bearing the reputation of “Montenegro Miami”, Budva is also a holiday destination near the island. The 2,500-year ancient city on the Adriatic Sea coast is favored by young people where parties are held frequently at the city square. While mentioning the most popular bay, it must be the Bay of Kotor. From July to August every year, innumerous yachts arrive at the bay for the “church in water”. This Catholic church named as Our Lady of the Rocks was built on the artificial island where many Italian art pieces are displayed. The unique geography with stunning waterfront views makes it a perfect choice for wedding ceremonies.
Northern Cyprus
Kyrenia is a stunning port of Northern Cyprus which attracts tourists with colorful yachts, small fishing boats and sunset view. For couples, it is absolutely romantic to enjoy the sunset and taste the top wine and local ice cream on the yacht.Furthermore, a candlelight dinner will be arranged at the high-end restaurant on the shore. Rizokarpaso is a small town situated in the northeastern Cyprus, you can enjoy the beautiful scenery of the entire coastline from different angles by standing at the edge of the reefs or paragliding. Under great conservation,Rizokarpaso is one of the largest turtle breeding grounds in the world where you can see the spectacular picture of thousands of small turtles crawling to the sea during the mating season in July and August.
With distinct historical backgrounds, local cuisines of Montenegro and Northern Cyprus differs greatly. For example, Burek from Montenegro has a crispy skin filled with cheese and mushrooms. Most of the local restaurants offer grilled seafood, roast beef patties, fried pork chop and so on. Don’t forget to enjoy a cup of local mellow red wine!
Northern Cyprus
Northern Cyprus is rich in lemon and orange, which dominate most of its dishes. Drinking juice is the best way to taste their freshness. In addition, the local cuisines are mainly Turkish and Greek due to geographical reasons, among which roast meat rolls are the most popular and others like cheese dumplings and scrambled eggs with cheese and tomatoes are also worth trying. What’s more, the price of wine is almost the cheapest in Europe thanks to the low duty on alcoholic beverages!
